Once in a while I stumble upon something really special happening in social media that grabs my attention and tugs at my heartstrings…

It’s happening right now. It’s incredibly touching. And the #NominateMyTeacher campaign for the Excellence in Theatre Education Award hits very, very close to home.

What’s the Excellence in Theatre Education Award?
The Excellence in Theatre Education Award, presented by Carnegie Mellon University and The Tony Awards on stage at the 2015 Tonys during the CBS telecast, is an award that “recognizes a K-12 theatre educator in the U.S. who embodies the highest standards in the profession. Demonstrating a positive impact on the lives of students, advancing the theatre profession and a commitment to excellence.”

The winning recipient of this award will receive a $10,000 cash prize for their school, a flight for two to NYC, hotel accommodations and a pair of tickets to the Tony Awards Ceremony and Gala. The finalists will receive a $1,000 cash prize for their schools, a flight for one to NYC, hotel accommodations and an invitation to an exclusive pre-Tony event.
Why is this award important?

Growing up with a fine arts education and eventually working as a young professional in the fine arts industry (I’m going to group all of the dramatic, musical and multi-media arts under this all-encompassing “umbrella” term for a moment) is challenging, intense and highly rewarding.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been exposed to some of the most incredible, inspiring and brilliant teachers. These teachers helped me to cultivate and grow my love of music, reach goals that I never even dreamed could be possible, and be the best version of myself in every aspect of my life, not just my “theatrical arts-self”. This is the epitome of the ultimate fine arts education professional. This is why it’s so incredibly wonderful that the Tony Awards have decided to publicly honor a sampling of these amazing (super-)human beings and recognize their inspiring work in nurturing and shaping the next generation of artists, actors, musicians and theatrical arts advocates.

Furthermore, I am now extremely privileged to have the perspectives of both student and teacher, as I’ve recently taken on the role of an arts education professional. I can say first-hand that it’s exciting, challenging and immensely rewarding to see the impact that arts education can make in a young person’s life. Fantastic, impassioned teachers are crucial to the continued success of the theatrical arts in North America, and across the globe.
