On March 12th, Juniper Research released a global study of mobile ticketing industry trends: Mobile & Online Ticketing: Transport, Events & NFC 2015-2019. Authored by Nitin Bhas, this study provides an in-depth understanding of the current trends in mobile ticketing. It also provides a 4-year forecast of future global ticket purchases.
The study focuses on eight key regions: North America, Latin America, West Europe, Central & East Europe, Far East & China, the Indian Subcontinent, Asia Pacific, and Africa & the Middle East. The study predicts that we will see global popularity and widespread adoption of mobile ticketing over the next 4 years. It is estimated that global ticket purchases will double in volume by 2019. In USD this is an increase from $24 billion in sales for 2015 to $32 billion in sales by 2019. This marks a full double in sales!
A Summary of Trends and Forecasted Growth
Along with the forecasted exponential growth expected in this arena, Bhas also identified a number of emerging mobile ticketing trends. Bhas also predicts the use of barcode and SMS-based ticketing. This is already especially popular in the transport industry. Bhas expects that we’ll see an influx in contactless payments with the introduction of Google Wallet and Apple Pay. He believes this will account for 1 in 3 purchases made by 2019.
Wearable devices are considered the largest area for mobile ticketing growth. The introduction of devices such as the Apple watch will mark a turning point for wearable device application with NFC payment options.
The Benefits of Adopting Mobile Ticketing Methods
Bhas says, “the challenge for mobile ticketing is educating the customer to make that migration from traditional means.” There are many benefits for community theaters to consider when considering mobile ticketing options. Of course, you will continue to have patrons that prefer traditional paper tickets, but I believe that you will see more and more patrons opting for the mobile ticketing option. Mobile ticketing is especially popular among younger patrons!
Here are a few more benefits of adopting a mobile ticketing system:
Mobile ticketing helps in reducing box office lines. It also helps to streamline entrance lines and event check-in proceedings.Mobile ticketing is convenient for patrons who worry about misplacing their paper ticket.Mobile ticketing reduces a theater’s printing costs. It also offers a more environmentally friendly ticketing option.
The Bottom Line
Being in the events and entertainment industry, we would love to see growth in the use and offerings of mobile ticketing! As Bhas says, “digital ticketing continues to evolve from serving as a simple replacement to a physical paper ticket, into an experience that provides rich and interactive information.” As technology becomes more advanced and sophisticated so does our use for it, as well as increased and wide-spread acceptance of it among event goers.
